Mary Preston

Mary is a provincially registered and nationally certified Speech Language Pathologist, who established Halifax Speech & Language Services in 2000. Over her career path, she has acquired extensive experience assessing and treating speech and language difficulties in children and adults through her work in public schools in BC and NS, large regional hospitals, developmental clinics, and private practice.

Mary currently has a strong interest in reading and writing development in school aged children; language processing disorders in children; childhood apraxia of speech; articulation development and accent modification.

She has taken extra clinical training in Accent Modification intervention for non-native speakers of Canadian English; extra clinical training in explicit phonemic-based reading and spelling instruction with the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS) and additional clinical study in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach for students with dyslexia.

In addition, she is a Hanen Certified SLP for the It Takes Two to Talk; a program to help coach parents on language development with their young child and has taken further clinical study in early literacy skill development in preschool children through Hanen programming.

Mary has been a clinical supervisor for graduate students at Dalhousie University and UBC. She holds an undergraduate degree in Nursing Science and prior to entering the field of speech language pathology, worked for several years in the NICU at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver and the IWK in Halifax.

Mary is a mother of four and an avid runner, completing several marathons and half marathons over the years, as one of her favorite recreational pastimes.

Tanya Wight

B.A., M.Sc., SLP Reg., SLP (C)

Tanya is a provincially registered and nationally certified Speech Language Pathologist with over 25 years of clinical experience. She began her career in the public school system in the Toronto area. She enjoyed the opportunity to support students with articulation, fluency, and voice difficulties while working with children from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Since returning to Halifax Tanya has been dedicated to private practice, supporting families at Halifax Speech & Language Services since 2009. Her current clinical interests include articulation difficulties, preschool speech and language development, language difficulties in school-aged children, as well as stuttering and voice disorders in both children and adults.

Outside the clinic Tanya enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. She enjoys reading, snuggling with her pets, and loves baking with her daughter.
